Flash Nonfiction in 50 Words
GENERATIONAL TIES
No longer needing my lap, my three-year-old granddaughter and I sit side-by-side in the café. She’s piecing it all together – the queuing, the paying. Distractedly, she rests her small hand on mine. It’s then I notice that, like me, she’s put a spare hair scrunchie around her wrist.

Author’s Note: While I wait for my next memoir to be published by Vine Leaves Press in 2026, I’m developing an interest in the short form of nonfiction, also known as Flash Nonfiction. I love the discipline of this form, where every word has to be involved in the heavy lifting. The teeny tiny piece above was published this morning in Vine Leaves 50 Give or Take. Maybe 50 words is the perfect length for our distracted brains in these crazy times.
Elizabeth, I love it. It’s a beautiful, quiet image, even amongst the bustle of a busy cafe.I think to myself, yes! 50 words … I should be able to knock a couple of these over before morning tea! But, ha ha, maybe not.
Thanks, Jen. Wouldn’t it be great to be able to write them as quickly as we red them. When I’m working on a short-short my goal for the end of each day is to have fewer words than I started with!
A tiny gem. Loved it!
Thank you, Janet.
